Placing students at the center of the educational experience, California State University Channel Islands provides undergraduate and graduate education that facilitates learning within and across disciplines through integrative approaches, emphasizes experiential and service learning, and graduates students with multicultural and international perspectives.
California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) is located midway between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles in Camarillo, California, just north of the Santa Monica Mountain range. The campus is situated in a thriving economic region that is home to major industrial and biotechnology firms, agricultural operations, as well as several non-profit agencies and organizations.
California State University Channel Islands is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). In March 2007, the WASC Education Effectiveness Review Team wrote: "The team commends Channel Islands for its institution-wide commitment to and implementation of learning-centered practices that place it far ahead of many much older and better-established universities within CSU, the state and nation." For information visit http://www.csuci.edu/accreditation/
More than 4,000 people attend, instruct and staff CSUCI making the University a significant economic contributor in Ventura County as well as the Central Coast region. The University was recently noted in the Ventura County Economic Outlook, an economic forecast publication, as "a boon for Ventura County citizens" and it also stated CSUCI will "significantly improve life in Ventura County." During the next year, CSUCI will receive the balance of nearly $84 million for campus improvements as part of Proposition 1D, which was approved by California voters in 2006. In 2007, CSUCI acquired an additional 153 acres making it an 826-acre facility, and one of the largest campuses–as far as actual size–in the 23–campus California State University System.
As CSU Channel Islands becomes the leading public, four-year educational institution in the region, one of the University's commitments is to preserve the history of the campus. Many of the buildings date back to the 1930s, when they were commissioned as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. From 1934 to 1997 the location was home of Camarillo State Hospital. The CSUCI campus is recognizable as the backdrop for many films and television programs.

CSUCI promotes using sustainable products, solid waste reduction, and the overarching practice of adaptive reuse of buildings on the University's campus. The University actively pursues projects to improve overall energy efficiency, and to implement programs that reduce dependency on finite resources such as water and fossil fuels. The responsibility of sustainability and "being green" rests on everyone's shoulders and the University encourages the entire campus community to recycle, use alternative transportation options, and moderate energy use.
University Glen faculty and staff housing will have 900 planned housing and apartments units when the final phase of 242 dwelling units is completed near the end of 2009. The University Town Center contains 30,000 square feet of commercial retail space on the first floor with apartments on the second and third floors. In 2007 The Cove Bookstore, the University's bookstore, relocated to the Town Center. For more information, see http://www.universityglenhomes.com/
Donations and gifts enhance educational programs, resources, and facilities, provide the University the flexibility to respond to opportunities, and attract and retain outstanding faculty, staff, and students. For information, see http://www.csuci.edu/giving

The new John Spoor Broome Library opened in April 2008. It is a combination of existing structure and new construction, which creates a dynamic focal point for the campus and also showcases the University's dedication to the adaptive reuse of existing structures. The 137,000-square-foot facility is a blend of the best qualities of a traditional library and digital resources. The Broome Library contains more than 147 computer stations, has 75,000 bound volumes and more than 150,000 electronic books, and has a seating capacity of 800.
CSUCI broke ground for the 4,148-square-foot Martin V. Smith Center for Integrative Decision-Making in spring 2008. The Center will consist of a large "case study" classroom with 60 stations for students. When completed in spring 2009, the case study classroom will contain advanced audio/visual equipment. Additionally, the classroom will be equipped to constantly show in real-time the indices of the major world financial markets.
